Ghana starts re-registration of SIM Cards on October 1

Starting tomorrow, October 1, 2021, Ghanaians and non-Ghanaians visiting the country are required to re-register their Subscriber Identification Module (SIM) Cards.

The process requires one to use the Ghana Card if he or she is a Ghanaian or the Passport if a foreigner.

Foreigners using the passport to register their SIM Cards are eligible to use them for only 30 Days upon which expiration, will be required to obtain a non-citizen Ghana Card to reactivate the SIM.

The development is in line with Vice President, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia’s digitisation quest to help in the formalization of the Ghanaian economy.

Speaking at the 5th CEO Summit in Accra, Dr Bawumia noted that the SIM re-registration exercise is aimed at helping curb activities such as SIM box and MoMo fraud.

In a nine step guide to link or re-register a SIM Card with the Ghana Card via USSD, Dial *404# and follow the prompts. One is only given only three attempts to answer security questions upon unsuccessful attempt.

The exercise under the auspices of the Ministry of Communication and the National Communication Authority, however, is scheduled to end in March 2022.
