The family of 30-year-old Francis Ameyaw, who was shot by some security officers at Kenyasi Newmont mining site without any provocation.

On November 2022, the deceased and other two friends who were using a tricycle, were stopped at a police check point at Tutuka Junction on the Kenyasi-Ntoroso road.It said even though the police allowed them to move on, they signalled the rider to stop, but he failed to do so.

The family said the police then fired at the men on the tricycle as they gave them a hot chase, leading to the death of one, while another was injured.

They explained that the deceased fell off the speeding tricycle when the bullet hit him while his colleagues were still being pursued by the police. It said the youth of the community became enraged upon learning of the death of the young man, resulting in a confrontation between the angry youth and the police on Tuesday during which some more gunshots were fired by the police.

Spokesperson for the family, Emmanuel Osei Acheampong said, “All they want is justice to be served. Witnesses at the scene can attest to the fact that the deceased committed no crime”.They are therefore calling on the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Newmont Ahafo Mines, Regional Minister and opinion leaders to ensure justice prevails.

Head of the family Op. William Kwame Boakye also call for fast track of the case in the Sunyani High Court for compensation to be paid since the deceased left behind two children and the family is finding it difficult to cater for them.
