NCCE Director Discusses Challenges and Advice Amid Limited Voter Registration and Low Turnout
The Electoral Commission of Ghana recently initiated a limited voter registration exercise, yet it is facing a significant challenge – low turnout.
This issue has been highlighted by Mr. Harris Quansah, the Asunafo North NCCE director in the Ahafo Region, during an interview on the Rejoice Amansan Ntie morning show. One of the primary reasons cited for this low turnout is the limited scope of registration. As per the current rules, only individuals who are 18 years old are eligible to register.
This targeted approach, while intended to streamline the registration process, may inadvertently contribute to a lack of enthusiasm among potential voters.
The absence of a more inclusive, general registration may deter many eligible individuals from participating in the democratic process.Mr. Harris Quansah emphasized the need for broader registration efforts to encourage more citizens to register.
He pointed out that a more inclusive registration process would likely result in a larger number of registered voters, thus fostering a more representative electoral system.
Furthermore, Mr. Quansah urged political parties to refrain from hate speeches that could incite violence during the upcoming election.
Additionally, he emphasized the importance of journalists and individuals avoiding the spread of false information, which can undermine the integrity of the electoral process.
